Accessibility Declaration
Our Commitment
At Showbie, we are committed to ensuring that our products and content are accessible to all users. We believe accessibility has the power to strengthen teaching and learning for everyone, not just those with disabilities, by making experiences clearer, more inclusive, and more effective. Accessibility at Showbie isn’t a checkbox, it’s an ongoing commitment and an inclusive part of how we design, develop, and support our platform and the people who use it.
Standards We Follow
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at the AA level for both the Showbie iOS and web applications. These internationally recognized standards guide how we build and evaluate our platform to ensure it is usable by all learners and educators.
Our Approach to Accessibility
We have partnered with Level Access, an industry leader in digital accessibility, to help identify areas for improvement and to guide our efforts. Our approach includes:
- Regular audits of our platform for accessibility compliance.
- Integration of accessibility guidelines and reviews into our design and development processes.
- Ongoing accessibility education for our teams, including product and engineering.
- User feedback loops with educators and students to identify accessibility barriers in real-world scenarios.
- Staying open, informed and responsive to guideline changes and new information.
Working Towards Compliance
While we strive for compliance across our platform, we are aware of some current limitations:
- Colour Reliance (WCAG 1.4.1)
In a few areas, such as folder colours, pinned posts, and response types, colour is the sole indicator. We're working on alternatives that do not rely on colour alone. - Text Resize (WCAG 1.4.4)
Text cannot currently be resized up to 200% without impacting layout or functionality. Improving this is a priority for future development. - Text Spacing (WCAG 1.4.12)
Our platform does not yet support user-defined text spacing without disrupting layout or functionality. We're exploring how to offer greater flexibility for users who benefit from adjusted spacing. - Keyboard Navigation (WCAG 2.1.1)
While most of the platform is keyboard-navigable, some areas (e.g. document previewer) are not fully accessible via keyboard alone. We are addressing this as part of ongoing updates. - Focus Visibility (WCAG 2.4.7)
Focus indicators are inconsistent on the web app, making it harder for keyboard users to track navigation. Improvements are in progress. - Programmatic Structure (WCAG 1.3.1)
Not all content structure and relationships are consistently conveyed to assistive technologies. We are working toward full compliance in all areas. - Component Consistency (WCAG 3.2.4)
Some interface components may behave or appear inconsistently across different views. We are working toward standardizing these through our design system.
Third Party Tools
While we aim for full accessibility across our digital ecosystem, some third-party tools we use such as Intercom (our support chat platform), may not fully meet WCAG 2.2 AA standards. Whenever possible, we choose partners that prioritize accessibility and are committed to continuous improvement in this area.
Leveraging iPad® Accessibility Features with Showbie
Many schools and districts use Showbie on iPad, and we’re proud to support and complement the powerful accessibility features built into iPadOS, such as VoiceOver, Speak Screen, Magnifier, Switch Control, and more. Educators and students can use these native tools in combination with Showbie to personalize their learning experience and access content in ways that work best for them. Educators can also combine Showbie’s digital features, such as Voice Notes, typed comments, and document annotations with these iPadOS tools to create inclusive learning environments.
